For Neil, the songs started to take on a theme.  There was a thread and before long, he sees that this trend should be more than just a collection of songs.  Playing these connected numbers live in Europe, their stories of corruption, the passage of time, extreme concern for the environment, and the consolidation of the media spurred on the idea of something greater
.  The film, Greendale and then the companion book, illustrated by longtime close friend and artist-extraordinaire, James Mazzeo was the logical next step.  Once the book was rolling the idea to create something REALLY special with "Mazz" erupted:

n 1975 got the call from Neil who asked him to illustrate the book.

Greendale ~ United States Series ~ James Mazzeo's Limited Edition
, Mazz outdid himself.  In this super rare edition, only 51 were created, each with ORIGINAL ART by Mazzeo contained within.  First, both Neil and Mazzeo sign the book.  Then Mazzeo hand painted each of the 51 copies, each completely different from the others.  He then named each book for one of the U.S. 50 states plus the District of Columbia.
Each individual book has within it
five different Mazz original paintings
.  Mazzeo used acrylic paints and took over four years to complete all 51 copies, making each first edition book a complete one-of-a-kind.

which is hand painted in the front cover next to the signatures and numbering) in the U.S. Series is in NEAR MINT plus condition.  It has never seen the light of day, as I have had it archivally stored since I bought it in 2006 or 2007.  It is Hand
Signed by Neil and Mazzeo, is number 12/51
and was painted by Mazzeo in October of 2005.  It contains one painting in the front that is roughly 3.5" x 4.5" and four throughout the book's pages that are roughly 4.5" x 5.5" in size.  The book comes in it's original beautiful clamshell case for safekeeping.  I have only pulled this out of it archival storage a few times to gaze at the beautiful artwork contained within.  It truly is a BEAUTY.
